Importing a vehicle from Japan to the United Kingdom involves customs clearance, approval or testing depending on the vehicle, and registration with the DVLA. This guide sets out each stage so you know what Rindo handles, what happens at the port and what you complete yourself.

For UK buyers, Rindo can take care of the import and the arrangements that follow, or you can manage the UK side yourself. The scope and cost of the chosen service are set out in your quote before you commit, so nothing is added automatically.
Most cars can be imported, but the approval route depends on the vehicle's age and how many of that model have been registered in the UK. The rules are set by the Department for Transport and the DVSA.

You will receive the Japanese export certificate with an English translation, the bill of lading, the commercial invoice and the de-registration record. These are used for customs clearance and registration.
[Confirm the full document list the UK process requires, including any evidence of VAT and duty payment.]
Vehicles ship from Japanese ports by roll-on roll-off or in containers. UK arrival ports depend on the shipping line and method.

On arrival the vehicle is discharged and held at the port until customs clearance is complete. Port storage charges can apply after a free period, so clearance should be arranged ahead of arrival.
An import declaration is made to HMRC and import duty and VAT are paid before the vehicle is released. Many customers use a customs clearing agent for this stage.
[Verify the current duty rate and VAT treatment for a used car from Japan, and the NOVA notification requirement, with the GOV.UK source and date.]
Depending on the vehicle, an approval scheme or inspection applies before the DVLA will register it. Older vehicles and limited-number imports follow different routes from recent mass-produced models.
[Verify the current schemes (for example IVA and MOT requirements) and when each applies.]
Registration is applied for with the DVLA using the import documents, proof of duty and VAT, approval evidence and insurance. Plates are issued once the vehicle is registered.
[Verify the current DVLA application process and fees.]
Rindo manages the purchase, export preparation, shipping booking and documents in Japan. Customs clearance, duty and tax, testing, registration and insurance in the UK are the customer's responsibility, with guidance from us and, where useful, a recommended local agent.
